WoS yn gwadu eistedd ar stori Bates

Bwrw'r Sul diwethaf yr oeddwn ymysg nifer o flogwyr i gwestiynu amseriad adroddiad yn y Wales on Sunday am fistimaners Mick Bates AC wedi noson ar y pop. Yr oeddwn yn teimlo ei fod yn ymddangos fel mwy na chyd-ddigwyddiad bod yr hyn a digwyddodd yn oriau man bora’r 19-20 Ionawr yn cael ei gyhoeddi yn y papur deunaw niwrnod yn niweddarach ar achlysur cynhadledd Gwanwyn y Rhyddfrydwyr Democrataidd. Yn y rhifyn cyfredol o'r papur mae'r gohebydd Matt Withers yn ymateb i'r cyhuddiad bod y papur wedi ceisio niweidio'r gynhadledd:

The story, which I wrote, broke last weekend on the front of our paper – coincidentally, on the second day of the Lib Dems’ Spring Conference in Swansea.

And it’s that timing which has led to many rumours, letters of complaint and plenty of rumblings on the blogosphere. The charge? Wales on Sunday knew about Mr Bates’ behaviour at the time it occurred – and deliberately held back running the story in a bid to disrupt the party’s conference.

Utter rubbish.

Mr Bates’ night on the tiles was on January 19. I was first alerted to what is alleged to have happened on Thursday, February 4, when my editor asked me to investigate a tip-off in an anonymous e-mail.

The next two days were spent trying to verify the truth of the allegations through a second source. Eventually, on the Friday afternoon, we found a senior source who was able to confirm an investigation into verbal abuse by Mr Bates into staff at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

We were unable to verify separate allegations of assault on paramedics. These made their way into the public domain the day after the WoS story.

I phoned Mick Bates’ mobile four times on the Friday afternoon to speak to him, each time without success, and eventually spoke to the Welsh Lib Dems’ head of communications, who was aware Mr Bates had suffered an accident that night, but not that he had been allegedly involved in trouble following it.

A statement from the party confirming it was investigating their AM followed early on Saturday evening.

So that’s why the story appeared when it did, rather than a deliberate attempt by Wales on Sunday to sabotage the Welsh Liberal Democrat Spring Conference.

In fact, the most baffling thing about it is there’s so many Lib Dems who genuinely believe their conference to be of such vast importance that journalists spend their precious time concocting vindictive and deliberate attempts to wreck it.

Os ydy Mick Bates AC yn euog o fwrw staff y gwasanaeth iechyd a oedd yn ceisio ei drin ar ôl damwain meddwol, y mae o'n ddihiryn o'r radd blaenaf ac yn haeddu cael ei gosbi gan law drom y gyfraith yr un fath ag unrhyw ddihiryn meddw arall sydd yn troi at drais yn ei ddiod. Mae ei esgus nad yw yn cofio'r digwyddiad (o herwydd y trawiad ar ei ben nid y cwrw yn ei bol) yn un tila ac mae ei ymddiheuriad o rwy'n sori OS wnes i rywbeth o'i le yn wan ac yn gwbl annigonol.

Mae Mr Bates wedi gadael ei hun, ei deulu, ei blaid , ei etholwyr a'r Cynulliad i lawr mewn ffordd arw. Y Cynulliad yw'r corff sydd a'r ddyletswydd i sicrhau bod gweithwyr y GIG yn cael eu hamddiffyn rhag y fath yma o ymddygiad. Rwy'n methu gweld sut mae Mr Bates yn gallu parhau yn aelod o'r Cynulliad os yw'r stori yma'n wir. Mi ddylai ymddiswyddo yn ddi-oed.

Er nad oes gennyf y gronyn lleiaf o gydymdeimlad a Mick Bates, mae yna elfen arall i'r stori sydd yn peri pryder hefyd. Mae'n debyg bod yr ymosodiad honedig wedi digwydd rhai wythnosau yn ôl. Os felly rhai wythnosau yn ôl dylid wedi torri'r stori, a dylai Mr Bates wedi ei orfodi i ymddiswyddo rhai wythnosau yn ôl. Mae'r ffaith bod gohebwyr wedi eistedd ar yr hanes am rai wythnosau er mwyn ei gadw ar gyfer ei gyhoeddi ar adeg cynhadledd y Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol yn drewi o ragfarn wleidyddol o'r fath waethaf. Gan hynny nid Mr Bates yw'r unig un ddylai dwys ystyried ei addasrwydd ar gyfer ei swydd, dylai gohebydd a golygydd Wales on Sunday gwneud yr union un peth.
